Interdisciplinary: The consideration of different disciplines to form novel ideas which do not fit clearly into any particular subject.

Multi-disciplinary: The study of more than one discipline.

As well as allowing disciplines to share ideas and methods, applying an interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary approach has a range of academic benefits for learners. Students can learn to position their studies in a wider context whilst developing a broader and more nuanced approach to critical and academic enquiry. In an even more complex and dynamic global workplace, this ability to understand and address problems from a range of perspectives and schools of thought is increasingly useful. Interdisciplinary teaching and multi-disciplinary learning are fostering growing opportunities for creative collaboration between students of different disciplines, while incorporating a more holistic range of disciplinary approaches.

Abstracts could focus on:

  • Projects facilitating interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary student work concerned with real world issues. 
  • Approaches to teaching knowledge and skills across programme boundaries 
  • The benefits of multi-disciplinary modules and programmes, and how they can be improved further be increased collaboration between disciplines.
  • Building an appreciation of alternative approaches to enquiry into teaching.
